Using Creative Writing and Art for postive Mental Health | 7th Feb – 22nd March 2014
Mezzanine Floor (Upstairs) Riverfront Arts Centre, Newport, NP20 1HG
In 2013, Gwent Arts in Health (Garth), Literature Wales, Newport Community Arts Development and Newport Libraries began a creative writing and arts project working with members of Hafal Newport, Jigsaw and MIND. Poets Michael Church and Patrick Jones worked with participants to produce bodies of work and encourage new writing. Artist Andy O'Rourke worked with members to produce illustrations and light pictures inspired by their writing.
The project included poetry workshops with Patrick Jones at Talygarn Ward, County Hospital, Pontypool, working with participants there to create new work. Patrick was also a 'Poet on Tour' at the Royal Gwent and St Woolos Hospitals in Newport for National Poetry Day in October 2013. Participants and Poets performed as part of Comedyport - Newport's Comedy Fringe Festival in October 2013 showcasing some of the work made in the project. 'Only When I Laugh' looked at the lighter side of some of our darker moments.
Join us for our Open Mic night on Tues 25th February 2014 in the Riverfront Upstairs Bar with poets Mike Church, Patrick Jones and the Healing Words project participants to celebrate the exhibition.
