As part of the Healing Words and Pictures project, patients and members of staff from Talygarn Ward have been working with writer and poet Patrick Jones to create poems, and artist Cerys Jackson to create artworks in response to their writing.

Patrick has worked with Talygarn ward for a number of years and recognizes that “There is a huge amount of hidden talent out there. It just needs a tiny spark to help it burn bright. These poets' words will etch themselves into your mind.” Vikki Burrow, Occupational Therapist for the ward added: “The amazing part of this work was how it became the focal part of the week for some individuals – it was the time they looked forward to the most and great to see the creative ideas flying around the room!

The selection of work on show Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre reflects the various stages of recovery that patients may be experiencing in the form of poems, crafts and collage.

The Healing Words project promotes creative writing and a variety of visual art practices as tools for positive mental health and wellbeing. The project is a partnership between Gwent Arts in Health, Literature Wales, Newport Live Community Arts and Torfaen County Borough Council, and works with a diverse range of groups across the greater Gwent area.

Gwent Arts in Health would like to thank the patients and staff of Talygarn Ward, County Hospital for their work on this project, and LGAC for their continued support.
